Review: A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab

Fast paced, Thrilling and Intoxicating Fantasy Read

“A Darker Shade of Magic,” is book one in the Shades of Magic trilogy. If you’ve been here since winter 2020, (or if you follow me on bookstagram 🙂 ) then you are probably aware of how much I adored this book.

The traveling between worlds, dark magic, pirates and thieves, plus the unique characters in this book, captivated me like never before. Also, Victoria Schwab’s writing style and her worldbuilding is top tier and I couldn’t resist it. 😉

Today I bring you the review for this book, as I promised on my IG stories; and I’ll also be sharing the updates for “A Gathering of Shadows,” book two, which I’m currently reading.

Favorite Fictional Places I’d Love to Visit!

Vividly and Wonderfully Described Fictional Settings

If there is something that we remember the most from our favorite books, are the book settings. Time periods, eras are part of a book’s setting too, but it is mostly the places the characters visit that we end up remembering: strange decorated houses, huge schools, unique stores, magnificent palaces and kingdoms and many more interesting places.

Some authors have the incredible ability to describe places and fantasy worlds in a way that you are mesmerized and have the desire to visit those places too.

“Books are the plane, and the train, and the road. They are the destination, and the journey. They are home.” -Anna Quindlen

Top 5 Oct & Nov 2020

Mystery, Fantasy Fiction, YA Fiction, Fairytale Retellings

It is December 1st , book lovers. I’m amazed at how fast this year went by (and I’ve probably said this every month) but it is true! I feel like yesterday was March 13 and lockdown was starting here in Honduras, but no. We’ve been on quarantine for 8 months so far! To be honest some months have felt longer and dreadful than others, but it’s finally December and 2020 is coming to an end.

Books I think Everyone Should Read…

Precious Lessons, Dazzling Writing Styles and a Devastating Love Story

What makes certain books become our favorites? Some may say that they were immersed in a certain character and that character’s book became part of their life. Others can say that a book changed the way they felt about themselves or the world, the way they view life. Or they may choose a book as favorite because they read that book at a certain period of their lives and it is now attached to that memory.

Popular Books I’ve Never Read and Why…

Cliché, Classics and Favoured… but I’m not too sure

Every book is an adventure and a story that stay with us and teaches us something. I’ve always said this and I believe it to be true. Especially those we read at a young age.

I began reading books around 7th and 8th grade and of course the first books I read were all the popular ones around the time. Yeah, you guessed it, Divergent and The Hunger Games for sure 😉

Book characters I’d love to be friends with!

Charming, Courageous and Inspiring Characters

I’ve always said that reading is like escaping this reality for a while. The amazing part is that in this new world we’re submerged in, we are not alone. We are surrounded by people with so many traits, abilities and personalities. They are from different time periods, cultures, or even different species. The book characters 😀 .
