Review: Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

Stunning, Breathtaking Masterpiece

Sarah J. Maas did a fascinating job in creating an incredible fantasy world and gave us some relatable and stunning characters we will always treasure 😉 . “Throne of Glass” is book one in this seven book series that follow the story of Adarlan’s most feared assassin, Celaena Sardothien and have been suggested to fans of The Hunger Games and Game of Thrones.

“Apparently, a woman can only go so long without a sword between her hands.”

“Throne of Glass” is a retelling of Cinderella but with many changes Sarah J. Maas did to the story. This book follows the plot of the imprisoned assassin, Celeana Sadothien, who is offered a shot at freedom if she can win a competition to become the king’s royal assassin. Full of mystery, action, magic and a slow-building romance, this novel will become one of your favorites and I assure you, you will want to read the sequels to the series 😀 .

If you want to understand the Throne of Glass world better and get to know the history of our main character, Celaena Sardothien, then I suggest you begin reading the prequel “The Assassin’s Blade.”

Five action packed novellas that narrate Celaena’s journey on five daring missions of the Assassin’s Guild in name of her, Arobynn Hamel. They take her from remote islands to hostile deserts, where she fights to liberate slaves and seeks to begin her rebellion. After acting against Arobynn’s orders she suffers an unimaginable punishment for her treachery.

After a year of hard labor in the salt mines of Endovier as a punishment for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin, Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince where he offers her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin.

Her opponents are men-thieves and assassins and warriors from across the empire, and if she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she’ll serve the kingdom for four years and then be granted her freedom.

During her time in the court and the tests for the champions place one of the other contestants turns up dead, quickly followed by another and another. Celaena is now determined to figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim; little does she know, that the search will lead her to discover a greater secret from long time ago, hidden to everyone below the castle.

“You could rattle the stars, you could do anything, if only you dared. And deep down, you know it, too. That’s what scares you most.”

I fell in love with these books. I was amazed by the storyline they followed because it is not only the story of Celaena you’re invested in, but also in the mystery the castle entails and the bigger purpose the competition was created for trailed by ancient magic.

A big role in me loving this books is the world Sarah J. Maas created. We have a huge continent with Kings and Princes (shout out to charming Prince Dorian:)) and a beautiful glass castle with secret passages and a gorgeous library. The setting of this book is stunning!

We also get to meet this imposing and stunning assassin, Celaena, who is the perfect main character because she isn’t the typical “poor me” character, but a girl who knows her value and who she is and is determined to fight for what is right and what will bring justice to the kingdom.

She is a great inspiration in many ways and is the perfect way to empower women who have to go through challenges that test their worth.

“Libraries were full of ideas—perhaps the most dangerous and powerful of all weapons.”

I truly recommend Throne of Glass to all fantasy lovers who are in for a spectacular story filled with magic, action, and awe-inspiring characters. You will be completely invested on reading the magical sequels.

Have you read Throne of Glass or is this book on your TBR? Tell me your thoughts about it down below!

“After serving out a year of hard labor in the salt mines of Endovier for her crimes, 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien is dragged before the Crown Prince. Prince Dorian offers her her freedom on one condition: she must act as his champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin.
If she beats her opponents in a series of eliminations, she’ll serve the kingdom for four years and then be granted her freedom. Celaena finds her training sessions with the captain of the guard, Westfall, challenging and exhilarating. But she’s bored stiff by court life. Things get a little more interesting when the prince starts to show interest in her, but it’s the gruff Captain Westfall who seems to understand her best.
Then one of the other contestants turns up dead… quickly followed by another. Can Celaena figure out who the killer is before she becomes a victim? As the young assassin investigates, her search leads her to discover a greater destiny than she could possibly have imagined.”

  1. What I love about this series is that each sequel is better than the previous book 😀 the 1st book is like only 10% of the story, it’s so much more complex and I love the character development going on, I can’t wait to continue this series ! Great review, I agree that Celaena is inspiring, I love stories about strong women 🙂

    • Exactly!! That’s so true, the first book is only the tip of the iceberg 😉 And it has an amazing character development for sure!!
Empowering women are always the most inspiring!
And thank you so much Deniz 😀
